Hannah and Cole said yes under the pines in Twain Harte — a small, sunny afternoon wedding in a garden courtyard that proved smaller can feel just as full.
Up in Twain Harte the trees do most of the work. Hannah and Cole kept their 2020 wedding small and close, an afternoon affair in a garden courtyard with tall pines and oaks leaning in overhead and a clean blue mountain sky above all of it. Fewer guests than a typical year, and somehow not a thing felt missing. Mountain venues always come with a couple of wrinkles, so we got our power sorted early and set up the booth under a wide tree at the edge of the patio, where we could see the whole courtyard and the light coming through the branches in long warm stripes.
Because the crowd was intimate, the ceremony felt almost like you'd wandered into something private. Hannah came down a pine-needle aisle to "Marry Me" by Train, everyone gathered in close, the vows carrying easily in the quiet of the trees. We kept cocktail hour warm and acoustic to match the forest — a little Gregory Alan Isakov, some Fleet Foxes — and dinner ran long and unhurried, full of the kind of toasts you only get when everyone in the room genuinely knows the couple. Their first dance was "Make You Feel My Love," and there wasn't a dry eye among the pines.
Here's the honest math of a small wedding: you can't disguise a thin floor with thirty people, so the music has to actually be right. We read the room rather than ran a setlist, then picked the moment this particular group would all get up at once. "Shut Up and Dance" did it — everyone rose together, and they stayed. A packed little floor under string lights and stars hits just as hard as any big ballroom.
By late afternoon the air had that crisp pine-country cool to it, and we closed with "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," the whole party swaying together in one happy knot. Hannah and Cole, thank you for a Twain Harte day that made the case for keeping it small.
