Dancing on the Clouds at a Northern California wedding

Dancing on the Clouds

A low-lying cloud rolls across the floor during your first dance, so it looks like the two of you are floating — pure magic in every photo.

"Dancing on the clouds" uses dry ice to create a dense, low-lying cloud that hugs the floor instead of filling the room. As your first dance begins, a soft white cloud spreads across the dance floor and swirls around your feet, so the two of you look like you're floating — one of the most romantic, photographed moments of the entire wedding.

What is dancing on the clouds?

It's a first-dance special effect. A machine heats water, dry ice goes in, and the result is a thick, cool fog that's heavier than air. Instead of rising like smoke, it rolls out across the floor at ankle height and holds there — forming a "cloud" that catches your lighting and reflects the two of you like a still lake. It lasts through your first dance, then fades cleanly: no haze hanging in the air, no smell, and no residue on the floor or your dress.

Dry ice, not a fog machine

This distinction matters more than most couples realize. Regular fog machines fill the whole room, drift toward the ceiling, and are the number-one way to set off a venue's smoke detectors mid-reception. Dry-ice cloud machines behave differently: the fog is cold and heavy, so it stays on the floor and dissipates before it can climb. That's why many venues that ban fog machines still allow dancing on the clouds — and we confirm with your venue ahead of time either way, so there are no surprises on the day.

How much does dancing on the clouds cost?

Dancing on the clouds is $450 as an add-on to any Modern Wedding DJs package, and it comes included in our Ultimate Wedding package. See how it fits alongside uplighting and the rest on our pricing & packages page.

Venue requirements

The effect works best indoors on a flat dance floor — outdoors, even a light breeze thins the cloud before it can build. During planning we'll ask about your floor, ceiling fans, and A/C placement, and we position the machine so the cloud forms exactly where your photographer needs it.

A moment you'll relive

Of all the add-ons couples choose, this is the one guests gasp at. Paired with warm uplighting and a well-chosen first-dance song, it turns three minutes into a memory you'll watch on repeat.

Frequently asked questions

Will dancing on the clouds set off smoke detectors?+
No — dry-ice fog is heavy and cold, so it stays near the floor rather than rising into the room like a fog machine's haze. It generally won't trigger smoke alarms, and we still confirm details with your venue beforehand.
How much does dancing on the clouds cost?+
Dancing on the clouds is $450 as an add-on to any of our packages, and it comes included in the Ultimate Wedding package.
How long does the cloud effect last?+
We time it to your first dance, with enough cloud for the key moments and photos. Our team operates it live so it looks its best on camera.
Can we do dancing on the clouds outdoors?+
It's an indoor effect — outdoors, even a light breeze disperses the cloud before it can build. If your reception is outside, ask us about uplighting and dance-floor lighting instead.
Is the cloud safe to dance on? Does it leave residue?+
Yes, it's safe — the fog is just condensed water vapor from dry ice. It leaves no residue, the floor stays dry, and it won't stain a dress or bother guests with scents or chemicals.
Does it work on any dance floor?+
It works best on a flat, relatively enclosed dance floor. We'll assess your space and venue rules to make sure the effect lands.
